Fashion and Economics

September 22, 2022adminBlog

Saving is a ‘virtue’ at the micro level and a ‘vice’ at the macro level.

I studied this concept during my college days.

But then as with a lot of things from college days – read it, studied it, wrote in exam, scored marks, passed with distinction, and forgot the concept.

Well… Online surfing, a common addiction for most of us (including me) brought me to a webpage where a lady was attempting a challenge posted by a company. The participants are required to wear the same dress for 100 days continuously. No other dress would be allowed in those 100 days. Contestants would be allowed to wash it only at night when they were  sleeping. When awake, the participant has to wear the same dress again. She can accessorise the dress and post pictures on social media. Women from various walks of life participated in this challenge. 50 women were selected to participate and 13 wore the same dress for 100 days straight. What was the outcome ?

  1. Monetary savings due to reduced shopping of clothes.
  2. Time savings related to selecting clothes everyday
  3. Efforts for laundry of all different clothes would be reduced.

Now this may seem as an environment friendly approach with fewer resources utilized in production of clothes and subsequent disposal to landfill. Now that’s definitely something to be appreciated and looked upto. But then I thought “WHAT IF” all women (especially our nine2five customers) started following this challenge?

I, being a team member of an upcoming fashion brand, got worried thinking about this with so many questions circling in my brain. If all women start using the same dress for 100 days then who will buy our products or the products made by any other manufacturers? How would businesses pay for the employees without any sales ?

Aren’t there so many factors already impacting the economy ?How does one balance and compare a greener planet to a happier planet or a planet  where people are employed and make a decent living ? How would we feel about a world where the daily life appears so dull and monochromatic ? Won’t we feel like the world is one big school with everyone in the same uniform for our entire lives ? everytime? What we may also forget is that wearing the same clothes day after day will lead to greater wear and tear and require buying clothes more often.

I leave it upon each of you to answer these questions. Now I am not recommending that we do the exact opposite of buying and having a wardrobe with 100s of different dresses (although that would be nice 😉 ) . We also do not need to break the bank to have a decent wardrobe. Surely there is a happy middle ground to be found.  Fashion and Economics don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Thanks
